The Tuesday (BayRun) and Thursday (Manly) fitness sessions are gathering momentum, and the club has now decided to invest in the services of a quality fitness instructor, who in addition to running these sessions, will be preparing exercise and stretching programmes for the club to use not only for pre-season, but during the season as well.
Our new fitness coach, is Anthony "Chief" Ippindo. Chief played top grade AFL for the Adelaide Crows, and was the Strength ad Conditioning Coach at the South Australian Institute of Sport, working with Rowing, Diving and Tennis. He was also the conditioning coach for the SA AFL state team.
All club members are invited to join the sessions, which will involve a varied programme including some interval work, core body strength, and lots of stretching - important for injury prevention and management! Those able to make it to Manly on Thursdays will also get to do some boxing sessions (handy for matches vs Glebe!). Whilst its important we all work hard at our fitness, taking part in sessions like these, with your team mates, is also a lot of fun, and much better than long road runs or boring gym sessions by yourself!
It is expected that players hoping to play in our Sydney Womens Hockey League teams, or mens top 2-3 grades, attend at least one of these sessions per week. If you are unable to do this, please email Solly (clubcoach@utshockey.org) to advise him of what fitness work you will be doing instead (many of you have State training commitments on these days). Fitness levels will be an important factor when it comes to selections, so please make the effort to attend over the next 6 weeks!
The Tuesday Bay Runs (meet at UTS Rowing Club carpark, Dobroyd Parade, Haberfield, by 7pm) will continue until March 1.
The Thursday sessions at Manly (meet at North Steyne surf club, opposite Pine St, at 7pm) will continue until 10 Feb.
Anthony recommends the use of a foam roller to aid in stretching and injury prevention. These normally retail for close to $30, but if you order from him (just email info@utshockey.org), it will only cost you $20.
More details on the commencement of turf training, trial dates and venues, and season training details, will be made available shortly - we are awaiting confirmation of our turf bookings.
See you all at training!
