UTS First grade Women’s DOMINATED Glebe first grade with a 6-1 victory

On a cold Sunday evening no one could be sure if it was the Olympic spirit or sheer determination that assisted us on the pitch. But the terms “magical” and “inspirational” have been used to describe this victory. Marva Collins once said “Success doesn’t come to you…you go get it” and as a team that’s what we accomplished during the game.
Although the first half started off slow both teams worked solidly in attack and defence. After precision passing took place up the field the ball found Sarah Kerly at the top of the circle, team England took a cracking shot straight to the back of the box. At half time we lead 1-0.
Half time entertainment consisted of a brilliant fireworks display over Homebush, the sparkling bursts of light proved to be a slight distraction however with wise words and a real willingness and want to dominate, the team knew we had to step up to take control over the game.
Mel Penn scored two awesome deflections, the first could have been called a “miss-trap” after strong play up the right side of the field from Loose and Prue Eiser the ball found Buck in the right position, with eyes shut… displaying this was no set play. The second came from a power hit by Lauren Richards outside the circle (a repeat of last week’s equalizing goal at full time) Young Buck was once again in the right place and took a deflection to the back of the net.
Amy Swan demonstrated the meaning of “champagne hockey” through composure in front of the keeper with a back stick jink into the corner of the goal, leaving Glebe shocked and amazed.
The short corner battery was twice successful in their execution. Kerly continuously pushed the ball out flawlessly to the top where Sarah Bennet trapped precisely and professionally every time. The first goal came from one of Reita’s famous power hits that dipped over the Glebe keeper to touch the backboard only an inch from the top. The second goal came in the final minutes when the same battery held composure. Reita waited for the keeper to drop before placing a low drag flick to the bottom left hand corner. This took the final score to 6-1.
There was solid support provided by the midfield and forwards by Cass Hill, Sam Shaw and Mel Howie. Cass Hill and Sam Shaw made several plays up the sideline switching the play and competing under pressure, while Mel Howie worked to find ways to link the play with forwards.
The defence worked hard together to dominate over the Glebe strikers. Renata Hercok made several quality saves denying Glebe from putting points on the score bored. Ally Bolland and Em Poole worked together helping control the game from the back, supporting the midfield and shutting down the Glebe forwards.

This game was a great result for the team. We performed with guts and glory all day long and although we did not rush… we also did not take our time.

Best and Fairest
3 – Renata Hercock
2 – Em Poole
1 – Lauren Richards
