Finals and Grand Finals

Congratulations to our Mens 3rd grade and Veterans teams - 2008 Premiers!!

Mens 3rd grade were totally dominant in their resounding 3-1 Grand Final victory over St George last weekend, to claim the SHA Div 2.1 premiership. After falling at the final hurdle last year, our mighty thirds were determined to secure victory, and did so in style. Two goals in the first half, to Paul Heaton and Andrew Needham, were followed by an early goal in the second, to Ben Wakim. Our defence was barely troubled, save for a consolation goal to St George in the final minute. Well done team, and thanks to the large, vocal team of supporters!!

Last night, our men’s Veterans also set out to avenge their defeat from last year’s decider. Despite dominating the game, scores were locked at 0-0 at the break, and it was Sydney Uni who scored early in the second half. But UTS struck back straight away, with a sensational individual effort from Just Nelson, who collected the ball from his own side of half way, went past numerous defenders, before rounding the goalie to equalise. We hit the lead with 10 minutes to go, when Dave Nixon tapped in after some great skills from James Telfer, but Sydney Uni struck back a few minutes later to send the game into sudden death extra time. Thankfully, Dennis van Es was on hand to calmly slot the winner from a penalty corner rebound, so secure a stunning victory!!

U15s PREMIERS!!!!
Congratulations to our u15 team, who won a thrilling grand final 1-0 over Sydney Uni last Friday night. In atrocious conditions, the team went ahead early from a goal by Jack Nelson, who was on hand to deflect a great pass from Ellen Dobrijevic. The whole team was made to work hard for the rest of the game, as the soggy conditions restricted the flow of the game, and allowed Sydney Uni to counter our usual fluid attacking movements. Our strong defensive unit managed to hold out for the remainder of the game, and victory was ours! This was the first season that UTS entered a junior team under our own name, and hopefully this will lead to increased player numbers and future success. Well done to the players, coaches, and parents, for supporting the development of junior hockey at UTS.

Mens 3rd Grade and Veterans teams win through to Grand Final!!!
Following a 2-0 victory over minor premiers Macquarie Uni, our 3rd grade team have made it back-to-back grand final appearances. The team withstood a mountain of early pressure from the Magguts, with James Lucas again outstanding in front of the net. A thunderous penalty corner strike from Andrew Needham saw UTS take the lead into the half-time break. The second half was again very even, with the Macquarie boys unable to handle the intensity of the game as umpires started dishing out yellow cards for continued dissent (theirs). Our mighty UTS boys kept their cool however, and Jason Selby extended the lead 10 minutes from full time, with a cheeky but well directed shot from the top of the circle.

The Grand Final is on Saturday September 20, on Pitch 2 at Homebush, starting 2.30pm. Please come along, and wear your UTS jackets!!!

Our men’s Veterans team also won their major semi final last week, defeating Sydney Uni 3-2. Goals were scored by James Telfer, Justin Nelson and David Nixon. This also puts the team into repeat Grand Finals, with the game to be played on Wednesday 24 Sep, Homebush Olympic Pitch, at 7pm. Again, please come along and support your UTS team!!

Mens 6th grade win through to Preliminary Final
Despite dominating the game, our men’s 6th grade team had to fight back from 2-0 down against Manly, finishing 2-2 after extra time, to progress to the Prelim Final (finished above Manly on the ladder). The team hit the turf again this Saturday, Sep 13, at Bankstown from 12.30pm, with a place in the Grand Final on offer.
