Matthew Smith, a 150 game veteran of the Australian Men's Hockey team, The Kookuburras, has signed to play for UTS for the next 3 years. As a striker, Matt is a prolific goalscorer, having scored over 50 goals for Australia, in a career that includes an Olympic Bronze medal from Atlanta, 1996.
UTS now features a male trio of Atlanta Olympians, Brendan Garard (Biff) and Stuart Carruthers (Razz) set to continue playing important roles at the club over the next few years. Not only will their experience, skills and fitness lift our mens 1st grade team towards an historic finals berth, the entire club will benefit from their presence and contributions, especially as we develop our Junior program into the future.
And with Hockeyroo Gold Medallists Lisa Carruthers and Shelley Andrews playing with our womens teams, UTS looks set for an exciting and succesful season.
Matt has just been selected in the Kookuburra squad to contest the Hockey World Cup, in Kuala Lumper, commencing in late Feb. UTS wishes him and the rest of the team all the best of luck, and hope his goalscoring feats continue once he dons the Teal, White and Navy Blue.
