Womens 1st Grade Win Premiership

With a game based on all out attack, UTS Womens 1st grade dominated the grand final against Glebe, winning the Premiership 3-1.

The result was a fitting end to a season that saw our team dominate throughout, losing just 1 game, before going on an unbeaten run of 22 games that also saw them win the Minor Premiership.

The stage is now set for UTS to become the dominant force in Sydney Hockey, with both mens and womens top grades playing at the highest level in the State.

The final was close for the first 50 minutes, with Glebe taking an early lead against the run of play. UTS forced corner after corner, but were unable to convert this pressure into a goal. Finally, with just seconds to go in the 1st half, Shelley Andrews scored the first of her 3 goals for the afternoon, to send the teams into the break locked at 1-1.

The second half started more even, before player-of-the-final Adele Cotton made a crucial play that swung the game into UTS' favour. With the ball looking to beat her over the sideline, Adele dived full length, using her reverse stick to pass the ball around her marker to left wing, Belinda Schwebel. Belinda ran the ball to the back-line, before cutting in-field and passing to striker Shelley Andrews, who easily beat the keeper and sent UTS to the lead.

Glebe had no fuel left in the tank, and watched helplessly a few minutes later when Shelley completed her hat-trick, in front of a large and vocal UTS crowd.

Congratulations to all players for a wonderful season, the victory was just reward for the effort that was put in. Congratulations also to coach Nathan Gilbert and manager Michelle Carlon.
